About CountryShape
CountryShape is an interactive web tool designed to explore the true relative sizes of world geography. Standard Mercator map projections significantly distort landmasses near the poles—making regions like Greenland appear similar in size to Africa, despite Africa being approximately 14 times larger.
Built for both desktop and mobile devices, CountryShape allows you to compare modern nations, state and provincial subdivisions, historical empires, and territorial entities. Features like 2-axis shape flipping, custom color themes, and instant link sharing make geographical comparisons accurate and engaging.
Geographic boundaries are provided by

How to Use
- Search & Add: Type any country, state, historical empire, or subdivision into the search bar to place its shape onto the map.
- Drag & Compare: Click and drag shapes across different latitudes to observe how their visual size dynamically updates relative to the map scale.

Rotate & Flip:
- Drag the Compass Dial at the bottom left to rotate selected shapes.
- Double-click or double-tap the compass needle at any time to reset the shape's rotation back to true North.
- Use the Flip H and Flip V buttons to mirror shapes horizontally or vertically.
- Context Menu (Right-Click / Tap): Right-click any shape on desktop (or tap to bring up options on mobile) to quickly flip, duplicate, bring to front, send to back, or delete the shape.
- Group Shapes: Select "Group Shapes" to combine multiple territories into a single master shape (such as grouping all 50 US States or European nations) so you can move, rotate, and color them together.
- Share Your Setup: Click the Share button to generate a unique link that instantly saves and loads your exact map arrangement for friends or social media.

Q: Why are large global entities like the British Empire, Spanish Empire, or NATO excluded?
A: Entities spanning multiple oceans or stretching around the globe lack a single geographic center point on a 2D Mercator map. Transporting these widespread regions across latitudes causes spatial calculations to distort severely. We focus on continuous landmasses and regional empires to ensure visual accuracy.
Q: Why do complex shapes simplify slightly while dragging?
A: High-detail geographical borders contain tens of thousands of coordinate points. To ensure smooth, responsive performance across all devices, the map temporarily displays a simplified outline while a shape is being dragged, instantly restoring high-resolution detail once released.
Q: How does the Grouping feature work?
A: Grouping allows you to merge multiple shapes into a single unit. Select "Group Shapes", click the desired territories on the map, and confirm. The combined area can then be dragged, rotated, flipped, and customized as one single shape.
Q: Can I use screenshots or recordings of CountryShape?

Privacy Policy
We respect your privacy and strive to keep this application light, secure, and transparent.
- No User Accounts: CountryShape does not require registration and does not store account or profile data on our servers.
- Map Arrangements: Your custom map setups live in your browser and in the shareable URL fragment you choose to copy. We do not persist shape positions or scene data server-side.
- Hosting & Delivery: The site and map assets are delivered through Cloudflare CDN. Standard CDN and web server logs may include basic request metadata (such as IP address, user agent, and requested URL).
- Map Services: Map tiles are loaded from third-party providers (including OpenStreetMap and Protomaps). Those providers handle their own server logs to deliver map graphics.
- Analytics & Advertisements: Non-intrusive ads may be added in the future to help keep this service free. If enabled, advertising networks may use standard browser metrics in accordance with their policies.
